An insight into my work placement with Fashion Designer GILES DEACON

HOW IT ALL STARTED
After the elation of success in the NOISE Festival, and as the relaxed feeling of summer passed, employment reality soon hit. There was a barrier of being unable to live on unpaid textile internships, yet not having enough studio experience to secure a proper position. NOISE providing a work placement with Giles Deacon meant I had something to look forward to in January, and gave me that opportunity which previously felt impossible to secure.
MY TIME AT GILES
Being my first placement with a fashion designer, I was intrigued to see how a successful studio operated and the different roles involved. There was a small core of skilled designers and staff working under Giles, as well as a number of students on university placements. I hoped to contribute to the design process, learn more about working in fashion, and avoid making any stupid or costly mistakes! All of which were achieved after my 6 week placement.
Most days would involve hand sewing; beading Swarovski’s to create 3D snakes, or sampling techniques for the embroidered mushrooms seen in his Autumn/Winter 2015 Collection – both of which are characteristic of Giles playful designs. The designers would review interns work, checking the quality and giving constructive direction. I valued the chance to work alongside more experienced freelance hand embroiderers and sewing machinists who offered guidance. On other days the tasks could be more varied, such as maintaining garments in the archive, a treasure trove within the studio. I was often sent on errands around London; sourcing fabrics, making deliveries and collections. It was interesting to visit new areas, discovering suppliers and other design partners who all contribute to Giles work.
After the last minute rush to get an ambitious collection ready for fashion week, it was rewarding to see the result of everyone’s hard work as the fashion show was stunning. I assisted backstage (amongst some high profile models!), finalising garments and helping with the dressing.
Following recommendations from GILES studio, I was delighted that the placement led to another short internship at Seiodra Design, a specialist embroidery company. Although I am unsure what these experiences will lead to now, I have learnt more about working in the Fashion environment and feel they will really enhance my CV. It is still textile design which captures my interest and will be the focus of what I pursue.
