NOISE 2006 MAGS, ZINES AND COMICS
CLAIRE LOMAX
![]() | NOISE 2006 Curator for Mags, Zines & Comics Claire is the Editor of Flux magazine. Flux magazine was launched in 1997 as a Manchester based Arts magazine with an outlook, attitude and style that would see it grow into a commercial success story as well as a truly independent voice on the cutting edge arts scene. Despite very modest beginnings and a lack of publishing experience Flux had an immediate impact. |
SELECTED WORK
Shades of Grey by Dave Bevan Described by it's creator, Dave Bevan, internet based, 'Shades of Grey' is full of "lurkers...weirdos...low-lifes & nay-do-wells, the very fabric of life."
The "lo-fi misery" zine, is a stream-of-consciousness web based diary of a mag that uses photos, sketches and words to fill each issue with its modern gothic narrative.
Claire adds "Seemingly random but fitting together like an artist scrapbook, I love the fact that it restricts itself to black and white, although it's online so could have had all the colours of the rainbow. Very visually engaging." |
Mercy Magazine by Joe Bramall and Doug Kerr Mercy is a creative organisation, based in Liverpool. The groups main aim is to make inroads into the creative industry through creating platforms that can showcase the skills of all its members.
Claire added "Mercy is lo-fi production wise, but beats a lot of 'real' magazines in terms of its consistently humourous content. The Liverpool based zine has narratives, stories, poems, trains of thought, rants "? about anything that gets its goat. It beats a lot of London zines because it is so un-self conscious. A team to watch for the future.
Mercy magazine is released once every two months, as an 'alternative' counter-culture publication inspired by the themes set by the editors Doug Kerr and Joe Bramall. |
Devout Magazine by Sarah Keedy Claire from Flux was impressed with Sarah's 'Devout Magazine', she said "I thought the concept behind the magazine was interesting and it has a confident, fun attitude. It would probably only work as a one-off magazine, but creating a glossy fashion magazine all about the link between fashion and religion, approached in a tongue in cheek way from the Pope as fashion muse, to the Da Vinci Code to Marilyn Manson alongside appropriated advertising has got to deserve a recommendation."? |
