NOISE NEWSLETTER March 14th 2006

Hello and welcome to the first edition of our newsletter with updates, stories and info about what’s happening at the NOISE Festival.

JAMES PURNELL

NOISE NOW OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS!

James Purnell, Minister for Creative Industries launched NOISE from Tate Liverpool on the 23rd February, along with a host of key speakers, including Denise Proctor NOISE Chief Executive, key funders; Arts Council and NWDA and NOISE Curator, Mark of Eley Kishimoto fashion label.

MP James Purnell told the audience that NOISE would bring an end to the prevailing ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’ culture in the creative industries, and would open up new and inclusive platforms for young people to showcase their talent, no matter what background or part of the country they were from.

Noise participant Jon Winstanley (23) continued “Many people have belief in their own ability… that they are the best in their field or can change the world with their talent, but why is it that no-one can see or hear them? For a young person sat in their bedroom with nothing more than talent, drive and ambition on their side, all they know is that this industry rarely gives them a chance, until NOISE. It’s accessible because anyone can enter.”

KILLA KELA

HUMAN BEATBOX MASTER, KILLA KELA CONFIRMS HIS COMMITMENT AS AMBASSADOR TO NOISE

Killa Kela’s skills as a multi-vocalist one-man orchestra have stunned audiences across the world on tours with Justin Timberlake, Jurassic 5 and NERD. Attending the NOISE launch at Tate Liverpool on the 23rd February, he announced his new commitment to NOISE.

Killa Kela put in a brilliant performance with an early Noise participant Angel, a talented singer songwriter with a distinctive R&B sound. Angel is now looking to advance her career with the help of NOISE. Their performance together brought home the point that the UK has a breadth of raw young talent who need to be given the opportunity and encouragement to platform and promote their creative abilities whether that be music, fashion, design etc. The same night Killa went on to put a spell-binding performance of his extraordinary beatbox skills at Manchester Academy. It was a brilliant end to an amazing day for the NOISE.

ANGEL

EARLY NOISE,PARTICIPANTS ANGEL AND VENGEANCE CREW ATTEND URBAN MUSIC EVENT AND GET RADIO PLAY ON HEARTLESS CREW’S 1XTRA SHOW!

U:ME 2005 took place on Sunday 5th March, specially created for young music talent, who want to make a career in the music business. Top urban names from Ras Kwame, Heartless Crew, Lethal Bizzle, Killa Kela (NOISE ambassador!) all attended the event in with a view to spotting new talent and to share their secrets of their success with up and coming music-makers.

NOISE supported artists Angel and Vengeance crew both attended the event with great success. Sheila Ohene, NOISE Radio Co-Ordinator and all round talent herself shares her experiences of the day: “The Urban Music event was buzzing with new talent all hoping to get noticed by industry professionals. With Spit TV, 1xtra’s 100% Homegrown and Jump off all broadcasting live from the event.”

NOISE filmed Vengeance Crew as a follow up to their participation in the Noise ”Hijacks Radio” project which aimed to equip young musicians with the skills to get radio airplay - • Recording music • Promotional CD’s, Press releases and biogs • Marketing/packaging of material • Composing issues • Industry issues including management and royalties.

‘Graduates’ of the NOISE, Vengeance Crew, were chosen to perform two of their latest tracks live on stage. Before Vengeance Crew went on stage they had a rare opportunity to sit down with BBC Radio 1xtra’s Heartless Crew and got some constructive criticism on their tracks. Heartless Crew particularly liked Vengeance Crew’s ‘use of positive lyrics’.

The day was also a great success for Angel, who only two weeks ago performed with Killa Kela at the NOISE launch. Angel performed her track live on Heartless Crew’s show. Overall a great day for new NOISE talent!
