Learn From My Mistakes

Initially this project was an investigation into childhood and nostalgia. It soon progressed into an exploration into adolescence and the issues teenagers deal with when entering the transition into young adults. Looking back at my own life during this period I noticed distinct similarities between my younger sister and myself. Having a six-year age difference between us, I reflected upon my experiences and how they compare to hers. I can see myself in her and, although we may share the same characteristics, I predict her teenage years will not be as rocky- as my own. I was the dummy run. I decided to try and solve the struggles she may face, the struggles I faced, the ones I had to figure out for myself. After looking at ways in which I could illustrate these points, I realised that the group of ideas I had collected, when placed together, were almost a guide to adolescence. This is where the project evolved into more of a concept. The contents of the hand-made boxes are just an idea but ultimately it is a kit devised to teach my sister, so she can-learn from my mistakes. The mirrored text stems from the notion of how young girls often secretly scrutinise themselves in the mirror everyday. The idea of mirror messages was to give a sense of confidentiality whilst the vanity case was to represent how teenagers often feel inferior to their peers when it comes to beauty.
