whilst the other piece was much more about evoking character, this piece is much more about the loneliness and isolation that faces us as we reach old age. My Nan has suffered from Schizophrenia the majority of her life. My mother looked after her for the majority of her life until earlier this year when she made the difficult decision to place her into permanent residential care, as her mental health had deteriorated so much that my mother was unable to cope. I find the home an uncomfortable place to be in. Like my Nan many of the people suffer senile dementia, and are no longer really aware of the world around them. this image is from the same colour film i shot Grandmas shoes on, but i decided that it worked much better in black and white. i think that it gives it a much more foreboding and sinister atmosphere. it also makes the vignetting around the edges(a characteristic of Holga lomographic images)much more profound, isolating the subject and adding to its loneley and sombre mood. it has also become slightly distorted due to the fact that the film was expired and it was taken very close, giving it the appearance of a fisheye image. i like the distortion, i feel it adds character. i also like the slightly sinister feel that is present.
