Musician / Sound Artist / Sound Designer / Film Composer /

introduction

I'm a sound artist from the Greater Manchester. I perform ambient music under the name 'Elska' and have experience writing film scores.

My name is James Greenhalgh and i'm a musician/sound artist based in Greater Manchester. I'm a recent graduate of the University of Wales, Newport where I received a BAhons in Creative Sound & Music. My work at Newport concentrated on the relationship between sound and visuals, concluding in a series of AudioVisual projects. During this time, I also worked on scores for both student and local independent films I write, record and perform ambient/experimental music under the name 'Elska', using a variety of different techniques including live improvisation, tape manipulation and circuit bending. Inspired by the work of Petri Kuljuntausta, I have been developing and fine tuning my skills in field recording. I have been using field recorders and a vast selection of microphones to capture sounds and incorporating these samples into my music. During the course of 2012, I have be utilising this technique while travelling around Europe. My current project (still a work in progress) uses samples taken from a trip to Helsinki and is on course to be finished by April 2013. This interest in field recording has also led me into the education sector. In the summer of 2010, I was selected by my tutor to be involved in a educational project aimed at a class of 8-9 years olds at Ysgol Pencae Cardiff. The project was based around teaching the children to listen to their environment in a different way. They then captured sounds from their newly acquired knowledge of audio territories and were taught how to edit their sounds into a composition. I was also lucky enough to give a guest lecture at a local sixth form on soundscapes and alternative recording techniques. Both of these projects were very well received. Since relocating back to the North of England I have been looking for internships and voluntary opportunities to gain more experience within the arts and media sector, while continuing to establish myself as an artist and find a larger audience for my work.

At the end of my first year of university i got the opportunity from my tutor to work on a World Sounds Project. The project was aimed at teaching field recording and editing techniques to primary school students. We worked at Ysgol Pencae school in Cardiff with a year 4 class of 30-odd.

We first started by introducing the idea of found sound, and that all sounds and noises have some form of musical value.

We then gave our pupils a quick tutorial in how to use hand held field recorders, then assisted them with capturing sounds in and around the school

After we had acquired the sounds, we helped the students construct samples and edit the overall piece until we had a finished product which they showed to the rest of the school and their parents.

This project was very rewarding, simply because the students had found a new respect for their audible surroundings. I learnt how to work with children, and more importantly i learnt how to teach people with no prior experience how to use musical software/hardware.

In my second year of university, I was contacted by Cardiff based filmmaker Kevin Jones. He had contacted the university looking for student composers to construct a soundtrack for his film.

The whole process took 3 months as Mr Jones gave me the opportunity to experiment with techniques and sounds.

Mr Jones was very helpful and gave me a great insight to how the industry works. The project helped me develop as a musician, but also work on the craft of soundtrack work, something I still do now while developing my documentaries.
